Tessellations are patterns of repeating shapes that don't overlap and don't have any gaps. Middle schoolers take this simple definition and engage in a lesson that combines visual art and mathematics. They cut out index cards using shapes that come from templates embedded in the plan. They put them together in a way that satisfies the definition, then color them in as they see fit. A very nice lesson on tessellations for your middle schoolers!
