How does asphalt exist underwater? This bizarre habitat was recently discovered in the Gulf of Mexico and explorers are just beginning to take samples and conduct laboratory experiments. The most surprising part is the wealth of sea life currently living on this oily mass. Sea cucumbers, crabs, and underwater plants sustain life despite this thick layer of asphalt; how do they do it?
