Finding Ocean Depth

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

How to oceanographers measure the sea's depth? Your scientists will step into their shoes in this application activity, first reading about how the speed of sound and a simple formula give scientists a depth estimation. Students calculate the depth of the ocean floor at different locations and then plot these depths on a graph, following up with 4 short-answer questions. This enrichment exercise is intended for use with the Glencoe McGraw Hill text Science Interactions.
