Sometimes the movie version of a book can fill in additional details about the source material, particularly when the film is thoughtfully directed and well-acted. Ninth graders watch a two minute clip from the movie Temple Grandin and compare the scene with the cattle chute design presentation from the first chapter of Grandin's book, Animals in Translation. Class members then formulate possible research inquiries about what they have read, viewed, and want to learn.

  • Assign the film for home viewing, or show the entire film after school or during lunch if you don't have time during class
  • Host a discussion for learners to come up with as many possible research inquiries as possible
