History Blog: Family Looking for Broken Sewer Pipe Finds 2,500 Years of History

Curated by ACT

A fascinating story about a family in Lecce, Italy, who made a major archaeological discovery while digging under their house to find the source of a problem in the pipes that led to a toilet. What they found instead was an entire complex of tombs, evidence of the Messapians and the Romans, buildings, a grain silo, a street, and lots more, some things dating back 2500 years. This blog entry describes the discovery, which eventually became the Museum Faggiano. Near the end of the article, there is a link to the museum and to a virtual tour. There is also a link in the corner of the image to the same tour in Google Maps, which may be easier to view.
