Incorporating To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, narrative writing, and friendly letters, this instructional activity is ideal for any number of units in your classroom. First, read chapter 10 of the novel, noting Scout and Jem's reactions to their peace-loving father's skill with a rifle. Then have your class ask their parents about their own skills in a friendly letter. A Six Trait Writing process takes them through a narrative about their parents' previously unknown skills.
