To gain insight into the many different types of habitats, individuals must first get to know their own. Here, scholars explore their school environment, draw a map, compare and contrast their surroundings to larger ones. They then write a poem about their favorite space at school, and listen carefully to the story, Welcome to the Green House by Jane Yolen.

Instructional Ideas

  • Go beyond the school; direct learners to draw a map of another area in town such as their neighborhood or favorite park
  • Create a poetry corner where pupils can read their poems to the class
  • Direct scholars to draw or write what they visualized while listening to the read-aloud

Classroom Considerations

  • The lesson is the first of four in a series focused on habitats, created by Rainforest Alliance
  • Many of the items found in the Included Materials section are required for the remaining lessons in the series

Pros

  • The lesson plan has a clear organizational pattern
  • The activity gets pupils up and out of the classroom
  • A picture example is provided

Cons

  • The link referenced in the math portion of the lesson no longer works; therefore, math instruction is vague
