Build upon the Pythagorean Theorem with the Law of Cosines. The 10th part of a 16-part series introduces the Law of Cosines. Class members use the the geometric representation of the Pythagorean Theorem to develop a proof of the Law of Cosines. Pupils apply what they learned and use the Law of Cosines to find measurements in oblique triangles.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have the class determine the range of the length of the third side
  • Create pairs and have them create problems that require them to apply the Law of Cosines to solve

Classroom Considerations

  • Class members should be familiar with the geometric representation of the Pythagorean Theorem

Pros

  • Scaffolding gives the teacher hints where the class may make common mistakes
  • Resource uses colors to distinguish the different geometric figures

Cons

Intro to the Trigonometric Ratios

Curated OER
This video introduces the basics of trigonometry. It starts by defining a right triangle and showing two different examples of finding the ratios of sine, cosine, and tangent using the SOH-CAH-TOA mnemonic. This resource could be used as...

What is the Pythagorean Theorem?

Curated OER
Need to find the length of a side of a right triangle? Just use the Pythagorean Theorem! Follow along as the tutor defines the Theorem, explains how it works, then uses it to determine the missing length of a right triangle.

Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem Using Transformations

Curated OER
Middle and high schoolers construct a triangle using Cabri Jr. They construct squares on each of the legs and hypotenuse of the triangle. Pupils show that the area of the squares on the leg equal the area of the square on the hypotenuse.
