The Dumbells were a group of soldiers who entertained troops from 1917-1918 and became an enormously popular vaudeville group afterwards, until 1932. At their first show for the troops, the soldier audience was preparing to boo them off the stage but was captivated from the start with the singing female impersonators as they hadn't seen a woman in ages.
