Thirty percent of energy used by schools is used inefficiently! Part two in the series of 12 has groups perform energy audits of their schools as part of the Cool Schools Challenge. Each group is assigned a specific room, performs the audit, inputs data into the carbon calculator, and then writes and posts an action plan for that room. Rooms (the teachers and other pupils) may choose to become involved by accepting the action plan.

Instructional Ideas

  • Talk to the rest of the teachers in your school to see which ones would be interested in participating in the challenge

Classroom Considerations

  • The link for the resources listed in the lesson does not work; find resources here: http://www.nwf.org/Eco-Schools-USA/About-Eco-Schools-USA/Take-Action/Cool-School-Challenge.aspx
  • Find all of the materials needed ahead of time—energy audit, carbon calculator, the CSC toolkit  and have adult volunteers ready to help groups in other rooms

Pros

  • A great lesson to get an entire school involved in energy sustainability
  • Includes a quiz and teacher key at the end of the lesson

Cons

  • None
