Lumen Learning: Encroachment and Resistance

Curated by ACT

In the latter part of the 1800s, settlers began to ignore treaties when expanding westward. The government followed suit by declaring they would no longer negotiate new treaties, that they had the power to enforce laws on reservation lands, and by altering existing treaties with the consent of the Supreme Court. These actions led to the abuse of power by the government and the military, and to clashes with the native peoples as they resisted, such as the Battle of Little Bighorn and the Modoc War.
