Magnet Academy: Heinrich Hertz

Curated by ACT

The discovery of radio waves, which was widely seen as confirmation of James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory and paved the way for numerous advances in communication technology, was made by German physicist Heinrich Hertz. In the late 1880s, Hertz carried out a comprehensive study of the waves to develop an understanding of their behavior. During the investigation he found that radio waves travel in straight lines and can be focused, diffracted, refracted and polarized.
