The controversies surrounding migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. have recently been a hot topic. To understand some of the issues involved, young scholars investigate the Migrant Caravans of 2018. A 10-page packet, including photos, a podcast, newspaper articles, and discussion questions, provide background information on the caravan and the intentions of the people involved. Participants craft a letter or essay in response to the materials to conclude the lesson.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have groups research current developments in the border controversies
  • Set aside extra prep time to prepare the many materials required for the lesson
  • Load the free The Daily app on devices to permit them to listen to the "Migrant caravan and the Midterms" podcast
  • Post the photographs around the classroom
  • Laminate the photographs to permit reuse

Classroom Considerations

  • The lesson has a point of view; preview the entire packet before presenting the lesson
  • The information in the packet from the 2018 caravan is dated
  • Requires projection equipment for the photographs and copies of the photo reaction sheets
  • A protocol must be in place to permit a safe, respectful discussion of this controversial issue

Pros

  • The lesson provides a different perspective to the debate

Cons

  • None
