Nothing better than the original! Help your class understand the relationship of an inverse function to its original function. Learners study the connection between the original function and its inverse through algebraic properties, tabular form, and graphic representations. The lessons begin with linear functions and then move to quadratic and exponential functions.

Instructional Ideas

  • Use a graphic organizer to record examples each day of the inverses of different function types

Classroom Considerations

  • Each day builds on the previous, so it works best in sequence
  • The final lesson requires prior setup to create and organize sets of cards
  • The first in an eight-part series

Pros

  • Lessons each include a concept-building activity with follow-up problems and instruction
  • Provides a teacher guide and answer keys

Family Ties: Exploring Families OF Functions

K20 LEARN
They say it runs in the family. Small groups use a card sorting activity to group graphs of functions into families. After grouping by families, the class develops conclusions for parent functions and create a graphic organizer.

Module 2: Linear and Exponential Functions

Mathematics Vision Project
Write, graph, and model all things linear and exponential. Building on the previous module in a nine-part Algebra I series, learners compare linear exponential modeling. They write equations, graph functions, and analyze key features.
