Fifth graders read a book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder to examine the hardships that were endured by pioneers traveling during the Westward Expansion of the US. They predict, summarize and participate in literature circles. They visit a number of web sites to research information about the family and friends of Wilder. They design a class mural and write an imaginary journal entry describing a hardship that a pioneer might have endured.
