Multiplying and Factoring Polynomial Expressions (part 1)

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Polynomial multiplication and factoring go hand in hand. Why not teach them together. This resource begins with an area model for distributing a monomial and then connects the process to factoring the GCF. Learners then advance to multiplying binomials and make connections to factoring. Multiplying is continually reinforced with the process of factoring.

Instructional Ideas
  • Adopt the resource to introduce multiplication of binomials and how the process relates to factoring
  • Use board work to allow for frequent checks for understanding
Classroom Considerations
  • Lesson may need to be expanded to more than one class period depending on the level of pupils' knowledge
  • Background knowledge should include factoring a GCF, factoring trinomials, and monomial multiplication
  • The first lesson in a 26-part series
Pros
  • A well-designed lesson that scaffolds the process of multiplying polynomials effectively
  • Handouts, keys, and a detailed teacher guide are provided
  • Exit ticket and opener are included
Cons
  • None
