The earth is a delicate and fragile thing; Why not engage your class in a craft project that will make them aware of our environment? Earth Day is celebrated as recycled materials are used to create earth window hangings. Crayons are melted onto paper with an iron to create unique representations of our world.

Pros

  • Because the activity uses recycled materials, it is quite inexpensive
  • The process of melting crayons is a great time to discuss the states of matter and how the crayons change from a solid to a liquid and back again
  • The project can be extended to include a writing assignment that describes why Earth Day is important

Cons

  • Adult supervision is definitely required. It may be a good idea to solicit help from parent volunteers to make this project run smoothly
