We all know someone who won't eat the banana with a brown spot, the grape with a dimple, and the apple with a bruise. Scholars use different fruits to explore what happens when fruits really start to decompose. They set up an experiment using three samples to explore what variables alter decomposition times. A class discussion at the end of the week allows everyone to share the variable they studied, the results, and more!

Instructional Ideas

  • Extend the lesson by seeing if all fruits decompose at the same rate

  • Buy fruit ahead of time, but only prepare at the last minute
  • Have a plan for handling fruit flies, as many schools don't appreciate when science labs attract them

Pros

  • Includes multiple extension ideas
  • Provides a few ideas for variables to test as well as sample answers

Cons

  • None
