Planning A Railroad Online Lesson

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Students plan a route across Donner Summit using topographical maps in order to understand the challenges involved in constructing the railroad in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In this history lesson, students first discover how to read a topographical map, then use these maps to try to find the route they recommend. Students study the original map of the route, made by Judah, and compare it to their own.
