Pride and Prejudice: List-Group-Label

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

What words would you use to describe Mr. Darcy? What about Elizabeth? Use vivid vocabulary to create lists of adjectives to describe the characters of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. After kids come up with their own lists of words, have them group the words together and decide which adjectives would be best assigned to particular characters.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have kids collect words in a journal that describe each character as they read
  • Add adjectives to class lists as plot turns and character development occurs
  • Use the lists to create character portraits, where kids use the adjectives to draw or paint specific characters from the book

Classroom Considerations

  • Instructions are vague; provide clear suggestions for the adjectives you'd like kids to list

Pros

  • A creative way for kids to become familiar with the characters in the novel
  • Fun and collaborative

Cons

  • None
