Instructional Ideas

  • Implement this resource as the culminating project for a geography unit on the 50 states
  • With older students, have them write a persuasive letter trying to convince citizens to adopt their new state names
  • Create a classroom bulletin board to display the postcards students design for their new state names

Classroom Considerations

  • Support students' research efforts by collecting a series of books about the 50 states from your school and/or local library

Pros

  • Offers suggestions for differentiating and extending the lesson to meet the needs of all learners
  • Includes a note-taking guide that supports children with researching their state
  • A rubric is included for assessing children's final work

Cons

  • None
