Pupils demonstrate their understanding of nets by designing a net of a box that contains 12 bottles. Given the full size top and side views of the bottle, they determine the dimensions needed for the finished box. The directions do not call for an accurately drawn net, but they do require the dimensions to be included on the net.

Instructional Ideas

  • Use the assessment before and after a unit on nets as a growth measurement
  • Extend the task to have the pupils actually construct their nets from poster board and fold them to build the box

Classroom Considerations

  • Provide metric rulers or tape measures so pupils can measure the bottles

Pros

  • Rubric contains the correct answers and scoring points
  • Student work contains questions to help pupils improve on their nets
  • The task is left open with few restrictions

Cons

  • None
