Assumptions and misconceptions are two things that underlie stereotypes. Introduce youngsters to the concept of stereotyping with a role-play activity. They pretend they are employees at a restaurant who have accused a person of committing a crime. As a group, they state who the culprit is and why. When they find out who the real culprit is, they discuss their biases and how stereotypes played into the scenario. This leads to a whole-group discussion on how stereotyping affects everyone involved.
