Taste and Smell

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

According to scientists and based on research, you can smell fear and disgust. The narrator explains how humans smell, following the chemical scent of pizza from outside the nose, into the body, and its effects. To round out the 16th video in the series of 47, he then does the same with taste, eating the pizza and following the chemical receptors throughout the body.

Instructional Ideas

  • Without showing students what you're doing, cut a lemon in the back of the room and have pupils raise their hands when they can smell it; discuss the sense of smell before showing the video
  • Have discussions about behaviors that can destroy your sense of smell such as smoking or certain drugs

Classroom Considerations

  • Use closed captioning to help learners follow along due to the speed at which the narrator speaks
  • This video is hosted on YouTube

Pros

  • Engaging hook about a woman who lost her sense of smell
  • Interesting portion at 7:20 about how our tongues don't have specific areas for specific tastes, pointing out that what students learned in elementary school is incorrect

Cons

  • None
