Texas Instruments: Numb3 Rs: The Leaf Drops

Curated by ACT

Based off of the hit television show NUMB3RS, this lesson has students simulate the sinking of a yacht in the ocean, which is analogous to dropping a piece of paper in air. Students drop the paper multiple times and then calculate the relative probability of the paper landing different distances from the paper's "anchor point" on the ground. Students then try to narrow the area of the "paper droppings" to include only 90% of the drops.
