The Founders' Constitution: Alexander Hamilton to James Duane

Curated by ACT

The original text from the University of Chicago Press of a 1780 letter from Alexander Hamilton to James Duane, who later became a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, on the weaknesses of the existing U.S. government under the Articles of Confederation. An excellent synopsis of Hamilton's chief objections to the Articles. Part of a larger site that constitutes an online edition of THE FOUNDERS' CONSTITUTION (originally published in 1986 and edited by noted scholars Philip B. Kurland and Ralph Lerner), which amasses a range of writings on how to make government "safe, steady, and accountable."
