The Higgs Boson, Part I

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Much like unicorns, or the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, people have been searching feverishly for the Higgs boson since its existence was first theorized. Part one of two videos shows pupils how scientists knew that the particle existed and what they believe the particle's function is. The narrator also explains that finding the Higgs does not complete the Standard Model but helps to fill in some gaps in the equation.

Instructional Ideas

  • Include the resource in a lesson about the standard model, subatomic particles, or an elevated discussion of mass
  • To extend learning, have partners research and present the work of the scientists at CERN so students can explore the details of high-level research

Classroom Considerations

  • Prior knowledge of subatomic particles is necessary to fully comprehend the resource
  • This video is hosted on YouTube

Pros

  • The resource makes the topic fairly easy to comprehend using animated components
  • Although young scholars may not be able to perform calculations using the Standard Model, the narrator does a thorough job of showing the important role that the Higgs boson plays in the equation

Cons

  • None
