Are you enjoying the use of all five senses? Imagine that you have to lose one of them; you can choose which one, but it's gone forever. Work through a lesson based on Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis that asks class members to rank their senses in order of their importance, to select the sense they'd prefer to lose, and then to encourage a group of their peers to agree on the sense they all could do without.

Instructional Ideas

  • Develop the short responses from the activity into longer narrative or argumentative essays
  • Stage a simulation that asks class members to experience life without one of their senses (have them wear blindfolds for a period of time, use ear plugs, plug their nose, etc), then have them write about what they experienced

Classroom Considerations

  • Beware the spelling mistakes on the student worksheet

Pros

  • Promotes critical thinking and application of the text
  • Helps to connect learners with Kafka's story
  • Provides a worksheet for kids to work through independently or as a group

Cons

  • The worksheet contains spelling errors and would need to be revised
