The Robot Challenge

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

It's every learners' worst nightmare: they drop their phone down a storm drain and can't get it back. Yikes! Here is an informative and entertaining video in which future engineers review the engineering process, and help to design a robot that will assist in retrieving the phone.

Concepts

robots, engineering design, engineers, technology resources

Instructional Ideas

  • Assign pupils to design their own robot, encouraging them to be creative in how they present and explain the robot's functions to the class
  • A question is posed at the end of the video; invite class members to email their responses and share what happens next

Classroom Considerations

  • Remind scholars not to test this solution in real life. It requires them to drop their phone down a storm drain, resulting in a lost or broken phone, as well as possible injury to one's self if they try to retrieve it
  • The 15th episode in a series of 17 videos that focuses on the engineering process
  • This video is hosted on YouTube

Pros

  • Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards
  • Examples and definitions are provided in kid-friendly language
  • The episode is highly engaging with appealing graphics, cartoon characters, sound effects, and humorous jokes

Cons

  • The host speaks quickly which may make taking notes or answering questions difficult for some viewers
