Middle schoolers engage in a lesson which reminds them that root words indicate the base meaning of a word, and that those roots are found in many different words that have similar meanings. Pairs of pupils use construction paper and colored pencils in order to create a poster that lists words that have a certain root. They write down at least ten words, then use dictionaries, or the Internet, to find even more words that share the same root. Finally, they organize the words chosen into a graphic organizer based on the root's definition and each word's meaning. Nice lesson!
