Introduce young geologists to types of volcanoes during the pre-lab. First graders explore how different liquids flow with an experiment on viscosity to simulate how different types of lava flow. Next, they learn about the parts of a volcano, draw an erupting volcano, and write a sentence about their drawing.

  • Project the types of volcanoes graphics on the board for all to see
  • Invite a volunteer to come in and assist with the lab

Classroom Considerations

  • Have class members refer to page 2 in the workbook (attached)
  • Acquire the necessary materials to complete the experiment prior to teaching
  • The first in a series of four lessons that make up a unit on the plate tectonics cycle
  • Some terms and the experiment may be too advanced for first graders; consider using the activity with older classes

Pros

  • Includes a student workbook for the entire unit
  • Procedures and blackline masters are included within the resource

Cons
