When people look in a mirror, they rarely see themselves as others see them. Tweens and teens can consider the significance of these disparities in a lesson that asks them to reflect on the kind of person they are and how they think others perceive them.

Concepts

social-emotional learning, self-awareness, career planning, personal finance, personal growth

Instructional Ideas

  • Ask class members to bring in a small box with the outside decorated with images of how they think others see them and the inside reflecting how they see themselves
  • Have individuals select one of the self-reflection prompts to use as an exit ticket
  • Laminate the adjective list to permit reuse

Classroom Considerations

  • The lesson has the potential to make some participants uncomfortable; therefore, ask a member of the counseling staff to observe the lesson and take note of those pupils who list only negative adjectives
  • The lesson asks instructors to share many details about themselves; preview the entire lesson to prepare responses to the prompts
  • Requires copies of the adjectives list and the "What Kind of Person Am I?" worksheet

Pros

  • Pupils consider how their traits can affect their personal and professional relationships

Cons

  • None
