Writing Fix: Picture Book Writing Lesson: Pros, Cons, and Interesting Hooks

Curated by ACT

Inspired by the picture book How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long, an enthusiastic tale that explores the pros and cons of being a pirate, students will research an interesting job and prepare to write about it. While researching, the writer will obtain a list of "pros" benefits associated with their researched jobs, and "cons" consequences associated with their researched jobs. Using the provided graphic organizer, students create a summary of their research that contains a strong lead , a conclusion that comes back to their lead's original idea, and two paragraphs: one focusing on pros and the other on cons.
