In this activity, When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant Mentor and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox are used as mentor texts to help students realize what are important in the characters' lives and in their own lives. Students will develop a self-portrait. Then students will write and "I Come From" poem about themselves that focuses on "nouns" that are important and expresses "why" these are important.
