The five lessons in the TeachEngineering: Skeletal System unit module are designed for honors anatomy and physiology classes. Young biomedical researchers are challenged to consider the case of a grandmother who fell and fractured her hip. An orthopedic specialist performs a DEXA scan, and the results show that the woman has a BMD of -3.3. Scholars must develop a probable diagnosis of her osteoporosis and identify some possible causes. In addition, they are asked to advise if her daughter and granddaughter should take measures to prevent the condition from happening to them.
