Use simulations to determine the probabilities of events to make decisions. Class members are presented with several scenarios, some with known probabilities and others without. Groups run simulations to gather data that they then use to determine probabilities and make decisions based on those probabilities.

Instructional Ideas

  • Consider doing the lesson over a two-day period and having individuals complete the problem set within the classroom

Classroom Considerations

  • Requires paper cups and balls of different colors that will fit in the cups
  • The problem set requires number dice and decks of cards
  • The 12th part of a 25-part series

Pros

  • Includes possible responses to discussion questions
  • Provides instructional support to visually show the class the sample space for the cup and ball experiment

Cons

  • None
