Two lessons promote starting the day with a balanced breakfast. Lesson one challenges scholars to create their own cereal after examining their current favorite cereal, including its nutrition facts. In lesson two, learners set their plates with pictures of food and write blurbs that describe why it's the best choice. A 10-question quiz tests pupils' comprehension.

Instructional Ideas

  • If teaching remotely, invite the class to meet early for a virtual breakfast gathering
  • Print colored pictures of labels instead of bringing in boxes of cereal
  • Invite the school's food-service manager to speak to the class about how they choose which foods to serve

Classroom Considerations

  • Keep allergies in mind if food is brought into the classroom
  • Participants require boxes of cereal, art supplies, magazine clippings, and copies of worksheets
  • Food security ranges among class members— emphasize the term balanced versus healthy, as a balanced meal from a fast-food restaurant may not be considered healthy, but it might be all the family could afford

Pros

  • The quiz comes with an answer key
  • Both lessons provide extension activities
  • Encourages smart choices

Cons

  • None
