Class members explore cultural diversity through a variety of texts that showcase the importance of traditions. Then, they interview their family members to research their own cultural background and write their findings on quilt pieces. Interview topics include the family's language, religion, celebrations, food, traditions, music, dances, and art.

Instructional Ideas

  • Provide learners with a sheet of lined paper to easily write research responses
  • Using large butcher paper, direct class members to design the class quilt's shape and cut out their own squares 
Classroom Considerations

  • The activity is the second of nine in a series that focuses on family heritage
  • A portion of the lesson is meant to be assigned as homework 
  • Visit the library, or download onto your mobile learning device, several books about different cultures
