Use Barbara Joosse's heartwarming story I Love You the Purplest (which can be found on YouTube if you don't have it) to practice vocabulary in context with emerging readers. This sensory text is an excellent opportunity to learn new words including the following: bountiful, flung, hoist, prowl, shimmer, sturdy, and twirl. Prepare pupils to be active listeners by pre-teaching these words and encouraging them to raise a hand when they hear them in the text. The comprehension prompts are a fantastic way to get learners connecting to outside concepts, and the graphic organizers may be an ideal homework assignment.
