Anyplace can become a beach! Budding readers explore Faith Ringgold's world of imagination in her book Tar Beach, which can be found on YouTube if you don't have it. What words will budding readers learn? They focus on the following here: claim, marvel, possession, and threaten. Go over these before reading aloud and help pupils employ context clues by asking them to indicate when they hear one in the text. Four comprehension questions (one for each word) prompt scholars to make connections to familiar concepts, and all learners can benefit from the graphic organizers.
