Class members make a real connection to matrices in the 25th part of a series of 32 by looking at the identity matrix and making the connection to the multiplicative identity in the real numbers. Pupils explore different matrices and determine the transformations they produce as they continue to discover the power of matrix notation.

Instructional Ideas

  • Instead of presenting the matrices in the opening, ask class members to create the matrix that performs the effect
  • Constantly refer back to transformations in the coordinate plane and the effect on the coordinates

Classroom Considerations

  • The class should already know how to multiply a 2 x 2 matrix

Pros

  • The last set of in-class exercises creates an organizer of transformations performed by specific matrices
  • The problem set answer key uses color coding to show the effects on the graph

Cons

  • None
