The entire text of the 19th amendment is only two sentences long. It declares that the right of citizens to vote "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." However, the passing of the amendment did not ensure that African Americans, male or female, could vote. A short PBS video introduces the topic of how the racial politics of the time influenced the efforts of suffragists to gain support for the amendment.
