Class members brainstorm a list of people in the news (immigrants, millennials, etc.). Teams then select one to research. Using the provided worksheet and guided by a list of questions, the teams examine the stereotypes in news reports and media about their group. After sharing their findings, the whole class considers how to address stereotypes in popular media.

Concepts

stereotypes, bias, media bias, gender bias, racism, media analysis

Instructional Ideas

  • The AAUW report, published in 2016, is slightly dated; have groups research and update the executives, school superintendents, and elected offices graphics
  • Provide class members with a link to the AAUW blog post if assigned as out-of-class reading

Classroom Considerations

  • The activity presumes that a protocol is in place to permit a safe, respectful discussion of stereotypes and biases
  • The AAUW blog post is 66 pages in length; if assigned as out-of-class reading, develop a study guide to support readers
  • Requires copies of the "Identifying Stereotypes" worksheet, one per group

Pros

  • Includes step-by-step directions and discussion questions

Cons

  • None
