Can utopia be achieved? Included here are three literature worksheets to pair with Lois Lowry's The Giver. Pupils work in groups to come up with solutions to society's issues, individuals back up a statement related to a topic in the novel, and learners fill out a chart about the character in order explore gender roles.

Instructional Ideas

  • Supplement your current unit on The Giver with these materials
  • Use the other strategies listed to inspire other activities and materials

Classroom Considerations

  • The first page lists nine different strategies; however, supporting materials are only included for the first and eighth activities (a third worksheet is also provided, but this is not on the list)

Pros

  • Each worksheet is followed by a journal entry; this is a great way for pupils to reflect on their learning and get in even more writing practice
  • The worksheets involve collaborative work and higher-level thinking

Cons

  • None
