A lecturer explains the awe a hypothetical visitor to Byzantium would have felt upon entering the Emperor's throne room. Because of this display of power and fascinating objects, the Byzantines were able to get others to fight for them rather than having to fight themselves. The Greek Orthodox Church stemmed from Byzantium and acted as a bonding force of nationalism.
