When missionaries went out from the Byzantine Empire, the rulers they converted became political allies. This worked well until the prophet Muhammad arose and united the Arab war-torn tribes. As Muhammad was a merchant, he worked to encourage trade and dialogue with Jews and Christians, tolerating these religions, but simply claiming a higher revelation.
