A timeline can be a powerful learning tool because it reveals a pattern in events. While few would consider St. Augustine, Florida a hotbed of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, a selection of background information and a timeline of events demonstrate the profound effect the city had on the movement, and why these events were key to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Provide class members with the timeline after completing the exercises in "One Long, Hot Summer:" Conflict in The Ancient City 1963-1964
- Have class members create a wall-sized version of the timeline and add similar timelines for other cities
