Using Coded Messages on the Underground Railroad

Students interpret the meanings of culturally significant songs sung during the period of slavery in the United States. They read the lyrics of songs representative of spirituals sung by slaves and decipher the coded messages in those songs. Students write their own coded messages and share them with the class.
