The eyes have it in a project that combines art with creative writing. Class members list three adjectives or characteristics of a person they admire. Then draw a picture of a pair of eyes that they feel reflects these characteristics. Finally, writers craft a narrative, fiction or non-fiction, that tells the stories of the person with these eyes.

Instructional Ideas

  • Some class members may need additional scaffolding to make the connection between the art activity and the writing activity; therefore, begin the lesson by projecting images of paintings like Vermeer's "Girl with a Pear Earring," "The Mona Lisa," "Curtis' "Banquo II," Rembrandt's "The Eyes of Rembrandt van Rijn," etc. showing only the eyes

Classroom Considerations

  • Requires a projection device for the PowerPoint and copies of the multiple documents

Pros

  • Teacher's notes offer additional suggestions for how to conduct the lesson

Cons

  • None
