With the help of two activities, scholars discover what's in their favorite foods by reading nutrition labels. Activity one challenges participants to write a letter to a fictional peer about the importance of making healthy choices. Activity two sheds light on foods marketed to kids and teens. Learners examine those labels to determine whether their nutritional claims are true or false.

Instructional Ideas

  • If needed, change the names in the activity so as not to highlight individual learners in your classroom
  • Give the quiz before and after you begin the resource to gauge how much the class comprehends
  • Ask pupils to search for two food labels for homework, direct them to print and bring it to school for the two activities

Classroom Considerations

  • Every child's food security is different—while looking at labels is a healthy habit, many high nutrient-based foods are costly; therefore, stress the importance of balance
  • Requires devices with access to the internet

Pros

  • Both activities offer extension ideas
  • The assessment comes with an answer key
  • Boosts writing skills

Cons

  • None
